Brentford fought back from a goal down to secure a creditable 1-1 draw at Southampton in front of 2,415 Brentford fans who’d made the trip to the South Coast. The overall attendance of 19169 was higher than Wigan vs. Manchester United.
Andy Scott made one change from the side that beat Norwich City on Tuesday night with James Wilson coming in for the injured Alan Bennett.
Brentford were almost a goal down within twenty seconds as Lambert was put through while the defence appealed for offside - but he shot straight at Lewis Price.
Brentford started to compose themselves and make a mark on the game with Myles Weston and Kevin O’Connor going close for the away team.
Southampton then hit the woodwork from an Adam Lallana effort before Brentford could also count themselves unlucky as a Sam Wood effort also cannoned back off the woodwork to ensure a goal-less first half.
In the second half Southampton, having brought on Saganowski and Thomson for Paterson and Mellis, found an extra gear and started to put the Bees under a lot of pressure. Good work from Ryan Dickson and Mark Phillips prevented Southampton forcing Lewis Price into action, but it wasn’t a surprise when they did break through the Brentford defence. A Lallana cross headed down by Lambert was fired in by Dan Harding to give the home side the lead.
This would provide a real test for the Bees, having yet to have gone a goal down in the League this season, and one they answered admirably. Ryan Dickson ran down the left beating three players and crossed it in for Cleveland Taylor to head home to send the Brentford fans into raptures. It was brilliant work from the young left back and the Bees players ran to congratulate him on his superb run.
Both sides pushed forward for a winner but were unable to break down both defences and Brentford took a hard earned point back to West London to cap a very satisfying few days for the Bees.
That's four points taken from two sides who were playing in the Premier League five years ago.
