Brentford 0 Southampton 3
30th April 2011

Greville Waterman on a somewhat rubbish final home game.

Men against boys at Griffin Park today as a severely weakened Brentford team was taken apart by Southampton.

Missing the injured Lee, Woodman, Legge, Balkestein, MacDonald, Simpson and Alexander the Bees were never in the game and had only one shot in anger from Grabban in the first half.

They trailed at the interval to soft goals by Lallana and Connolly after poor goalkeeping and defending respectively - and it could and should have been more.

The game meandered on in the sun as Brentford wilted and never mounted a serious challenge and they put on a poor non-performance which was not well received by a last home game of the season crowd keen to be entertained.

Grabban did what he does best after the break - flatter to deceive by working himself cleverly into an excellent position before firing wastefully wide.

Schlupp also had a good penalty shout turned down after being flattened by the massive Jaidi.

Saunders then continued Brentford's miserable record from the spot when he hit the post after Weston was brought down and Gobern added a late third for the Saints.

Roll on next season and there is a lot of work that needs to be done in the meantime.
