In 1999 the BIAS committee decided to formalise Paul Stedman's work in shadowing the club's search for a new ground, with the creation of a Stadium Action Group. This group would be responsible for shadowing future initiatives made by the club in this area, as well as well as researching the possibilities and pitfalls involved from an independent perspective.
The aims of the Stadium Action Group were to act as a repository for information on Griffin Park, possible new sites, relevant legislation, and developments at other clubs, in order to be able to assess the club's needs and options.
There has been much work for the group, Brentford FC having been engaged in an almost constant search for a new ground throughout the lifetime of BIAS. Firstly the practical, emotional, and political implications of any of Ron Noades' six declared sites for a new ground required investigating. When these options were let slip in favour of groundshares at Woking or Kingston, successful opposition to the proposals was strengthened by technical arguments provided by the Group.
It is fair to say that the current Bees United scheme for a new stadium at
Lionel Road, allied to short-term improvements at Griffin Park, have been developed in close collaboration with the Group. Under its auspices BIAS committee members have undertaken research into stadium development, canvassed members' opinions, and lobbyed decision-makers, in order to maximise the possibility of realising these ambitious proposals.
Upon his election to the BIAS Chair, Paul was forced to delegate much of the responsibility for the Group, a role which was taken on by Matt Dolman, who as an architect had always had an interest in stadia. Even after his subsequent election to the Chair, Matt continued his work.
The stadium issue is of critical importance to the future of the club, and much work has been - and continues to be - done by certain members of the BU Board, with Paul & particularly Matt playing a significant part in this.
