We note the sanctions handed to Ivan Toney by the Football Association today. The punishment imposed on him for betting on football matches is a direct consequence of his actions.
There is no doubt that Ivan is one of the finest footballers to have ever played for Brentford. His performances have played a big part our rise to the Premier League and have rightly earned him England international status. But he has let his team mates and coaching staff down. Whether he understands or not, Ivan is also looked upon as a role model by many Brentford fans, lots of them impressionable youngsters.
We feel compelled to address the broader issue of the football authorities’ approach to gambling in the sport. They have confused priorities. It appears contradictory that while players face punishment for betting on matches, the authorities readily accept sponsorship money from betting companies.
The recent decision by the Premier League to ban front shirt betting sponsors from 2026 is a step in the right direction but could be perceived as merely window dressing. There is an urgent need for a comprehensive reassessment of consumer betting involvement in professional football.
Furthermore, we express our disappointment with the leaks that occurred throughout the disciplinary process, which found their way to the national press. Such breaches of confidentiality are deeply concerning and undermine its integrity. We urge for a thorough investigation into how these leaks transpired.

By engaging in such activities, he has adversely affected the club, which will now have to continue paying him a significant sum in wages while he serves his ban.”

Just curious: Does the club have a contractual obligation to continue to pay IT’s wages (in full?) given that he has brought the club into disrepute, which in most organisations would amount to a breach of employment contract terms.
